One of my absolute favorite parts of being a newborn photographer is preserving those little moments that tell your family’s story. While those soft blankets and adorable hats are always fun, it’s the personal touches that make each session truly unique.

I love when parents include special props during their at home newborn session—items that mean something to you. Whether it’s a guitar, surfboard, or even your gardening tools, incorporating elements of your life creates images that not only highlight your newborn but also reflect your passions and journey.

Here are a few of my favorite client ideas to inspire you for your in-home newborn session!

Musical Instruments: Tuning Into Love

Music has a way of connecting us all, and if you or your partner are musicians, why not include that in your newborn’s first photos? Imagine your little one nestled inside an open guitar case, sleeping peacefully while surrounded by the sounds that will fill their future. Or maybe cradling a tiny tambourine or drumstick. Whether it’s a family heirloom violin or the keyboard you’ve spent countless hours practicing on, these props tell a story of rhythm and harmony in your life—now shared with your baby.

Surfboard Dreams

For parents who love the ocean, nothing speaks louder than a surfboard. I’ve had clients want to include their surf board into their newborn's session, and the results were incredible! Picture your little one resting on your favorite board, with the colors and patterns of the ocean surrounding them. This is a great way to share your love of the beach and waves from day one. Plus, it’s a fun reminder that they’ll be riding waves with you before you know it!

Running Into Parenthood: Race Medals & Sneakers

For the runners out there, don’t be afraid to show off your race medals or those well-worn sneakers that have taken you across countless finish lines. You could hang your medals as a backdrop or even have your baby resting on a blanket surrounded by your collection of bibs or race memorabilia. It’s a beautiful way to share the importance of perseverance, fitness, and dedication—values you may one day pass along to your little one.

Gardening Goodness

Do you have a green thumb? Why not incorporate some elements from your garden into your session? We can walk right outside to your yard to show off baby and your passion as one! Your baby surrounded by fresh flowers or leafy greens makes for a natural and peaceful setting. Plus, it’s a lovely way to share a part of your everyday life. Bringing your love of the earth into their early memories just feels right.

Handmade Blankets: Wrapped in Love

One of the most sentimental props that can truly make your newborn session special is a handmade blanket. Whether it was knit by a grandparent, crocheted by a family friend, or sewn with love by someone close to you, these blankets hold warmth and stories that make them more than just a cozy cover. I love using handmade blankets as part of newborn photos—whether your little one is snuggled up in it or lying on top of it, the personal connection shines through. These blankets are often heirlooms in the making, adding another layer of love to your family’s narrative.

Books, Books, Books!

For the bookworms, bring on the pages! I’ve done sessions where we’ve incorporated stacks of beloved books, creating a cozy little nest for your newborn to rest in. Whether it’s your favorite novels or a collection of children's books you can’t wait to read together, this kind of personal prop can create some really heartfelt moments.

Let’s Make It Yours

At Sound Roots Photography, I always encourage my clients to think about including meaningful props within the home to their newborn session. Not only does it make the experience more personal, but it also adds layers of storytelling to your photos that go beyond the usual shots. These are the photos you’ll cherish for years to come—the ones that speak to who you are, what you love, and the beautiful new chapter in your life.

So, if you’re preparing for an in-home newborn session, think about the things that represent your passions, your history, and your family’s story. The more personal, the better!

Let’s preserve the heart of your family through your favorite things—whether it’s the strings of a guitar, the wheels of a bike, or the petals of your favorite flower. After all, these aren’t just newborn photos—they’re memories that will grow with your child.
