A Seattle Family Photography Experience Designed for Real Life

A few years ago, a mom reached out to gently suggest that I show more variety in how families were represented on my website. She was going through a divorce and wanted to see single parents reflected in the family photography section — families that looked like hers.

I was genuinely grateful she spoke up.

My goal has always been for Sound Roots Photography to reflect the real families I serve across the Seattle area — not just one version of family life. While I did have at least one image representing a single-parent household, her message encouraged me to expand that representation intentionally.

Because families come in many forms across Seattle, West Seattle, Burien, and the greater Puget Sound — and every one of them deserves to see their story valued and documented.

Why I Created the “Year in the Life” Photography Package

A few years ago, I launched my Year in the Life package after finishing three consecutive personal Project 365s, where I photographed my own family every single day.

Those projects changed how I viewed photography forever.

I realized that the most meaningful images weren’t perfectly coordinated annual portraits — they were the ordinary, intimate moments that only reveal themselves over time. The quiet mornings. The messy afternoons. The evolving rhythms of family life.

I wanted Seattle families to experience that same depth of storytelling through in-home documentary family photography — something more honest than a once-a-year photo session.

What I didn’t expect was how strongly this package would resonate with single parents.

Almost immediately, two single mothers signed up.

One shared this:

“I'm a single mom by choice with a 3-month-old and quickly realized she might only have selfies of us if I don't arrange family photo sessions. The Year in the Life is exactly what I'm looking for but didn't know it — so glad you offer it!”

And that perfectly captures why this work matters.

More Than Just Selfies

Single parents are often the family historians — documenting milestones, birthdays, and everyday moments.

But too often, they are missing from the story themselves.

Selfies prove you were there.

Documentary photography shows how you loved.

The way your child reaches for your hand.

The way you laugh together in the kitchen.

The bedtime routines that feel exhausting now but will someday feel sacred.

These are the moments your children will want to remember.

Gain Perspective on Your Parenting

When you’re in the thick of parenting — especially parenting solo — it’s easy to feel like you’re barely keeping up.

Having an outside observer document your family allows you to see your parenting from a new perspective.

Seattle parents often tell me they notice things in their galleries they never realized in the moment:

  • patience they didn’t know they had
  • connection during chaotic days
  • tenderness hidden inside ordinary routines

Documentary family photography helps you witness your own love story as a parent.

Let Your Children See Proof That You Were There Too

You already do an incredible job documenting your child’s growth, interests, and milestones.

But how often are you fully present in those memories?

Not just smiling at the camera — but interacting, comforting, playing, and loving.

Your children deserve photographs that show:

  • how you held them
  • how you showed up
  • how home felt during this season of life

Selfies capture presence.

Storytelling photography captures relationship.

Why In-Home Sessions Matter for Seattle Families

Many of my Year in the Life sessions take place right at home — whether that’s a cozy Seattle craftsman, a West Seattle bungalow, or a busy family home in Burien.

Your home tells your story.

The toys on the floor.

The art taped to the fridge.

Even the scribbles on the wall you barely notice anymore.

These details may feel ordinary now, but they become priceless markers of childhood later.

As a Seattle documentary family photographer, my role isn’t to perfect your space — it’s to preserve your reality with honesty and care.

Your Story Deserves to Be Fully Seen

If you’re a single parent, you already know how quickly the year moves.

The routines that feel endless today will quietly disappear tomorrow. Childhood shifts. Seasons change. And the story of how you built your family — your strength, your love, your presence — deserves to be remembered.

The Year in the Life experience is more than family photos. It’s a way to ensure your children can one day look back and see not only themselves growing, but you growing alongside them.

If you’re a single parent in Seattle, West Seattle, Burien, Kent, or the surrounding Puget Sound area and want photographs that reflect real life — messy, meaningful, and deeply connected — I would be honored to document your year.
